franklin county, the middle city here in columbus. the capital city of montgomery county is is dayton and hamilton county is cincinnati in the southwest. so barack obama did very well in the cities throughout the entire state. the keys to watch tonight, if mitt romney has a chance at winning ohio, we should know this early on, once hamilton county starts to check in, why is that so critical? hamilton county had not gone democratic since 1964 until barack obama won that county by 8 points four years ago. it went blue when it was so red for 40 long years. another key to watch here up here in the northeast, a lot of people grew up in cincinnati, hamilton county have moved to the surrounding counties here where the suburbs have now moved away from the city. this is warren county. look at the vote margin from 2008 with john mccain getting 68% of the vote. seems like a great and healthy number, right? look what george bush did in that same county in 2004. he picked up 72% of the vote. mitt romney needs to be around these george bush numbers

there's columbus, more catholics up in the north. but it stretches south. >> woodruff: do you see anything else in those numbers? are are we about to make another call? wyoming, okay. we're calling wyoming for mitt romney. the home of dick cheney. i think this is the state that president obama had the worst showing in, in 2008 if i'm not mistaken. so this is not also not a surprise. >> ifill: also dick cheney's state. >> woodruff: we're going to look it up right now. any of those results say anything? >> population density does matter. you go to a dense area you're probably in a democratic area. you go to a sparse area -- and wyoming certainly qualifies -- you're probably in a republican area. >> woodruff: it's beautiful out there. >> it certainly is. their electoral vote should count for more. >> ifill: so is new york. we were talking earlier and we were talking to margaret about exactly why mitt romney would spend his day today in a dense area. i saw he gave an interview to a radio station where he basically said i don't want to si

he's in ohio, he's in columbus right now and you are there at the secretary of state's office and we know every single vote, every polling place is being watched tonight, ron. >> reporter: they're being watched very closely and, diane, 1.6, 1.8 million voters actually voted early either by absentee ballots or in person going to early voting stations. those will be the first votes counted. we start to get those in about 20, maybe 30 minutes from now. we will get an indication, for example, if there is a high turnout in those early voting areas around cleveland. that would be very favorable to president obama. and meanwhile, as you were saying, the auto bailout has figured prominently in this state something like one in eight jobs are involved in the auto industry and the obama campaign was able to really bludgeon mitt romney with that issue in recent days in a way magnifying romney's attack line saying that those jeeps would be built in china. the response was so overwhelming by the obama administration and auto executives it may have caused that line by governor romney to backfire on
